Jury convicts man of shooting, killing another man in 2023

GREELEY, Colo. (Weld County D.A.) – A Weld County man faces up to 48 years in prison after he shot and killed another man during a gathering at a Weld County home last year.

On Tuesday, a Weld County jury convicted 20-year-old Benjamin Mitich of second-degree murder for killing 21-year-old Jonathan Hayes.

On February 4, 2023, Weld County deputies were called to a home located at 12499 Weld County Road 94 in unincorporated Weld County.

When deputies arrived to the home, they found the victim with a gunshot wound to the head. The victim was flown to Northern Colorado Medical Center where he was later pronounced deceased.

The defendant faces 16 to 48 years in the Colorado Department of Corrections. A sentencing hearing is scheduled for December 6th at 9:00 A.M. in Division 11. He’s currently in-custody at the Weld County Jail and being held without bond.

Deputy District Attorneys Lacy Wells and Daniel Skelton prosecuted this case.
